DarkHorse Comics and Lucas Films has announced that the original draft screenplay for Star Wars will be made into an eight issue comic book series!
The series entitled, “The Star Wars”, like the original is set for release in September 2013.
Thanks to the editing of this draft, we have the epic and timeless Episode 4… but what was it almost? What did we miss out on? Some of the notable original ideas that stand out were, Luke Skywalker was an older Jedi General, the scoundrel smuggler Han Solo was a “Lizard type alien”, the protagonist was Annikin Starkiller, and Light Sabers were called “Lazer Swords”. After watching the final version it is safe to say that we dodged a “blaster” on that one!
“This is not an April Fools joke,” said Dark Horse Comics’ Randy Stradley, who will edit the book. “This is a real thing; it’s really happening.”
Former illustrator of the “Avengers”, Mike Mayhew, will pencil the series while the adapted script will be created by J.W. Rinzler, writer of several Star Wars themed titles.
“I once asked (Lucas) if we could adapt his rough draft,” Rinzler said in statement. “He was hesitant. Years later, with Dark Horse’s invaluable help, we showed him a few drawn and colored pages of what it might look like. He gave us the okay.”
