Ah, the BAFTAs. The British answer to Oscars, you may say; although at times a bit more woefully rain-sodden, but hardly less glamorous. To win one would mean assuring for yourself a cosy place in the department dubbed “quality viewing” as approved by the critics.
This year, on 12 May, things are looking as if they are going to be interesting – to a certain set. Midwives, fairy cakes and ballroom dancing will be among the topics struggling for the big win. Meanwhile, our favourite show the Game of Thrones will be ploughing forth to victory together with those daintier and prissier subjects – like a grouchy high-school rebel among fluffy-haired cheerleaders.
M. Jeffery in her article for Digital Spy is absolutely correct in stating that Game of Thrones’ main merit, that should be the most important factor in considering whether the show should win a BAFTA, is its originality. Though the BAFTA ceremony is hardly unused to great fantasy stories (Harry Potter, the Golden Compass, etc.), it seems that this year, the Audience Award might be scooped by Game of Thrones – precisely because it is unusual, gripping and has its own rugged style, plus an army of devoted fans. It is a story that pulls you in and leaves you guessing – a blessed relief from the monotony of cake-baking and baby woes. Arya Stark would undoubtedly have approved!
