Sony is either fully confident that Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be a box office smash (it comes out May 2, 2014), or the studio has just jumped the gun in one of the riskiest moves ever. Marketing and distribution chief Jeff Blake said: “’Spider-Man’ is our most important, most successful, and most beloved franchise, so we’re thrilled that we are in a position to lock in these prime release dates over the next five years.” Yeah, it’s probably also because with the recent surge in superhero and comic-based films Spider-Man is also the only thing Sony has to compete with Disney/Marvel and Warner Bros./DC now that they’ve signed the rights to Ghost Rider back to Marvel. If ASM 2 doesn’t perform up to expectations, will that jeopardize the future of the following films? Guess we’ll just have to wait until next year to find out.
Amazing Spider Man 3 will hit theaters on June 10, 2016, and 4 will follow on May 4, 2018.
