HBO has announced the actor who will be cast as the Red Viper of Dorne, or Prince Oberyn Martell of Dorne in Games of Thrones’s fourth season. Prince Oberyn is father of the deadly sand snakes of Dorne, his daughters, younger brother to the ruling prince, Prince Doran and uncle to Princess Arianne of Dorne. He also faces down the dangerous and fearsome Gregor Clegane, A.K.A. The Mountain Who Rides. At least in the books. The Martell family of Dorne become one more powerful noble  family that is vying for the Iron throne of Westoros.

Cast to play this character is the Chilean actor Pedro Pascal. From David Benioff and Dan Weiss about the casting of the Prince of Oberyn:

“This was a tough one. The Red Viper is sexy and charming, yet believably dangerous; intensely likable, yet driven by hate. The boys love him, the girls love him, and he loves them all back. Unless your last name is Lannister. We found a fellow who can handle the job description and make it seem effortless. He wasn’t easy to find and he won’t be easy to stop.”

I have always found the Martell family to be fascinating and it’s exciting to see this character being introduced into the HBO version of the story, finally. The author, George R. R. Martin seems happy with the casting choice of this actor. The only problem is that season four is now nine months away.
