While speaking at the San Diego Comi-Con, Sherlock producer Sue Vertue has confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch(Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Hobbit) and Martin Freeman (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Hobbit) are “optioned” for a season four.
“There is definitely going to be a fourth series,” said Vertue, “we just haven’t decided when we’re going to do it…I think as long as everyone wants to keep doing it, we’ll keep doing it.” – RadioTimes.Com
Earlier in an interview with The Radio Times UK, Cumberbatch did expose a season 4 of the hit show:
“We’ve agreed to two more series but I could get into trouble for saying that […] All I know at the moment is I’m doing these three [episodes of the upcoming series] and another three.” said Cumberbatch adding, “It just depends on Martin and I’s availability, how long we can keep it going. It depends on Steven’s ability. I’d love to keep it going.”
The announcement brought cheers from the clambering fans! To understand their excitement would be…”elementary”.
Freeman was unable to make the SDCC, but added his input in a prepared video previewed at the start of the Sherlock panel that also included a very funny talk with Sherlock co-star, Cumberbatch:
