OFFICIAL: The Twelfth "Doctor Who" is…

The odds makers were right! <—(See article)

Hosted by Zoe Ball and announced with grand fanfare and exposure, the twelfth Doctor was named on the BBC special shown LIVE around the world!

Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One said: “BBC One is the home of big live events and this special live show is the perfect way to reveal the identity of the next Doctor and share it with the nation. The Doctor is a truly iconic role and I’m more than excited about the booking.”

Capaldi was given great praise as a successor by Matt Smith;

The program showcased guests from the 50 years of the long running series, including Steven Moffat, who addressed the thoughts of some, that the Doctor should be played by a woman “I also believe it is time for the Queen to be played by a man.” he joked.

As reported by RadioTimes, producer Steven Moffat commented on his choice of Capaldi, “Yes. The list went ‘Peter Capaldi’. It was a very short list.” adding, “[He came on the radar] a fair amount of time ago. I happened to know he’s a big fan,” said Moffat. “There’s something very seductive about an utterly brilliant, arresting looking leading man actor – one of the most talented actors in Britain – who you happen to know is a big fan of the show.”You start to think ‘maybe we should so something about that’.”

What about the choice of an older Doctor? Moffat addressed that with fans, “…the apparent age of the Doctor makes no narrative sense at all – he’s been anything from his 20s to his 70s. Obviously he doesn’t care, he just sort of picks a face off the rack and goes with it!

“I think it’s good that we’ve got a different age, just because I cannot imagine what somebody in their 20s would do with the Doctor after Matt showed us all how to be a 20s Doctor. I don’t know what you would do after that, because he was so perfect. You’d have to be an alternative or a deliberate contradiction — it wouldn’t work, I don’t think. So it makes life easier, I suppose, that Peter is different. But that wasn’t the reason, the reason was… the Doctor was in the room and that’s it. You don’t argue with that!”

Capaldi seems legitimately excited to play the role citing that he had been a Doctor Who fan since he was nine years old. It is always refreshing for me and other fans when the role of a beloved character is cared for by the actor playing the part as the fans.

He has played numerous roles in film and television, but is best known for his role as Malcolm Tucker, a spin doctor in the BBC comedy series The Thick of It and its follow-up film In the Loop. Capaldi was born in Glasgow.
