Roland Emmerich, director of the 1994 movie Stargate which starred James Spader and Kurt Russel, is thinking of entering Stargate territory once again – this time with a rebooted trilogy of films! Though it was a hit the first film never got a sequel but it did generate several popular science fiction spin-off television shows of the same name: Stargate: SG1, Stargate: Infinity, Stargate: Atlantis (my personal favorite) and Stargate: Universe. However, according to Emmerich, these spin-offs weren’t a part of his original plan. For his upcoming plans to continue working in the Stargate universe he has this to say:
“I originally wanted to make it a trilogy. Now, after all this time, I couldn’t do a trilogy anymore. Because the actors look totally different. That would not work. We are talking…We went to MGM, who has the rights, and we proposed to do a sequel, but as a reboot. We want to reboot it as a movie, and then do three parts. And that’s what we’re doing right now. Pretty soon, we are going to have to look for a writer and star.”
Right now it is not known if Emmerich will actually write, direct or only produce these films. The cast from the original Stargate movie will not be returning because they are too old, nor will any of the casts from the Stargate spin-offs be returning, as far as anyone knows, because should this project come to fruition, it will be a complete reboot.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. I LOVE the Stargate movie and Stargate: SG1. Atlantis was ok. Never saw the others. I’m trying to ponder a new Stargate without my beloved Daniel Jackson and it’s just not working for me.
Reboots are so hit or miss. The first one was written so well. I’m afraid they’d just ruin it by trying to start over.
Yeah. I’m taking a wait and see approach. You are right about reboots. Hit or miss!
I love the original Stargate movie as well. So long as they are actually making a sequel and not a remake, I can get behind this.
When I read about this last night I was just…gah…I didn’t know what to really think. I am just, a huge Stargate fan. I own all the spin-off series, the movie and my Daniel Jackson poster is sitting in my wardrobe gathering dust (should get that out again, just for kicks). Dad started me on SG1 really early, because it was so good for kids, I could watch it when I was 6 or something with him on the couch and we loved it 😀
I mean, I’m all for *more* Stargate! I was so, so, so upset when Atlantis was cancelled and then Universe was cancelled *just* when it was getting interesting!
But the first movie was so good, can they pull it off again?
I guess, I’ll just take the wait and see approach too. If they ruined it, I’d never forgive them. XD
