According to Movie Web, Joe Cornish is no longer set to direct the third Star Trek film. Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions were in active negotiations with Cornish to direct the sequel but he is no longer on the project and no specific reason was given for why he left the project. Movie Web reported last month that he was a top contender to replace Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams, who had to back out due to his involvement in the Star Wars franchise. J.J. Abrams is still attached as a producer on the third Star Trek sequel, along with Bryan Burk and David Ellison.
Paramount wants Star Trek 3 in theaters by 2016, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek TV series, created by Gene Roddenberry. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and the rest of the main cast members are expected to return to Star Trek 3.
