Late Breaking News: Tolkien Professor Corey Olsen Offers Live Commentary on The Hobbit: Desolation
of Smaug
Tuesday, December 17, 2013 – The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug is evoking reactions from Tolkien fans
ranging from extreme loathing to outright giddiness. If your own reactions about the movie are strong
(in whatever direction), you have an opportunity to examine them in the context of the reactions of
Tolkien scholar, Corey Olsen.
Tonight at 9:30 (Eastern Time), Corey will share his thoughts about movie 2 of 3 of Jackson’s adaptation.
Considering the book alongside the movie, he will offer his own insights and opinions about the
characters and settings of the second movie.
Prof. Olsen is a Tolkien scholar with an open mind. Since the first of Peter Jackson’s film adaptations was
release over 10 years ago, he has taken a generous (but still critical) view of the additions, changes,
and representations of The Lord of the Rings and the first installment of The Hobbit trilogy. With deep
knowledge of Tolkien’s books, he will offer a unique viewpoint of the movie that will give you lots of
food for thought.
