Cubicle 7 Entertainment & Sophisticated Games’ officially liscensed Middle-earth table-top role-playing game The One Ring: Adventures Over the Edge of the Wild has been recieved with both critical and commerical success. It won Lucca Games and Comics Fair 2012 – Best in Show, Golden Geek 2012 – Best Art and Presentation, Silver – Best Production Values ENnie Awards 2012, Gold – Best Art, Origins Awards 2012, a Nomination for Best RPG ENNie Awards 2012, and is beloved by fans across the globe. But with the forth-coming card game Hobbit Tales from the Green Dragon Inn, award-winning game designers Francesco Nepitello and Marco Maggi are giving gamers a new way to explore Middle-earth – and this time without a character sheet!
Hobbit Tales is a competitive story-telling card game based around the premise that the players are all hobbits sitting around the Green Dragon Inn spinning “far off tales and children’s stories” (as Ted Sandyman might say) over a pint and a pipe. Players take turns using the situations, images and descriptiors on their cards to create a narrative story. Along the way other players may use their own cards to hinder or stymie the would-be tale-weaver.
Hobbit Tales from the Green Dragon will include one rule set, a board, 75 adventure cards, 40 hazard cards, a set of cardboard game tokens, a 12-sided die with special characters depicted on the die (which veterans of The One Ring RPG will recognize as a feat die), and 5 drink coasters – because the bartender at the Green Dragon doesn’t want to have to clean up all your mess. It is a game for 2-5 hobbits and a preview video can be seen on Cubicle 7 Entertainment’s offiicial YouTube channel.
While the specifics of game-play seem to be a tightly guarded secret over at Cubicle 7 Entertainment & Sophisticated Games, it has been revealed that Hobbit Tales can be intergrated with The One Ring: Adentures Over the Edge of the Wild. Exact details of how this works have not been revealed, but this author speculates that it ties into TOR”s Fellowship phase.
What hasn’t been so secretive about Hobbit Tales is the amazing art. A crack team of artists including Andy Hepworth, Jon Hodgson, Ralph Horsley, Jan Pospisil, and Jeremy McHugh have provided the beautiful illustrations featured in the game.
Hobbit Tales from the Green Dragon Inn is available for pre-order at the Cubicle 7 Entertainment Web Store for $29.99 and will released in January of 2014.
