I was listening to a sci-fi /fantasy podcast a few weeks ago and I ran across some information about something I’d never heard about. it’s the 2014 SciFi Experience at the Steel Droppings website. The host of the challenge is Carl V. Anderson. I ended up joining as it looked like a fun thing to do.
So, what is it you ask?
Carl V. Anderson, book reviewer, blogger and all around geek is inviting readers, reviewers and general sci-fi geeks to come and spend time with him reading and experiencing science fiction for January and February. It’s an annual event that has been going on for seven years now. It’s a giant read-a-long for those who love speculative fiction, whether it is vintage science fiction or newer science fiction. He also hosts the Once Upon A Time challenge (which starts in March for fantasy, fairy tales, folklore and mythology) and RIP – Reader’s Imbibing Peril challenge for those who love Gothic literature and horror. In his own words:
” I have long since made peace with the realization that I won’t be piloting a light freighter alongside a wookie or beaming up any time soon. That has not diminished the excitement I feel when traveling within our solar system or beyond through the pages of a good book or the via the imagination of creators of science fiction television and film. “
So, the object of this sci-fi read-a-long is to:
1. Continue the love affair with science fiction
2. Return to science fiction after an absence, or
3. Experience for the first time just how exhilarating science fiction can be.
Usually the SciFi Experience starts in January and runs through the end of February. (Also, they will be adding to the Experience Andrea’s Vintage Science Fiction Month which runs through the month of January 2014. If you love vintage science fiction check out Vintage Science Fiction Month!) Join and read and/or view some science fiction over the next few months. There are no numbers of things you are required to read or view. No hard and fast rules. It isn’t a real challenge or homework assignment, just an opportunity to experience the wonder of science fiction.
Consider signing up. There will be a review site (here) where you can post any science fiction book, television, film or game reviews for things you experience during the months of December and January and February. It sounded like a lot of fun and since I’d planned on focusing on vintage science fiction for 2014 on my own, when I came across Carl’s website, it seemed like a great idea. I’m going to be reading Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Barsoom series (Martian series) and may be some of Jules Verne’s work. Right now the Barsoom series – the first seven – can be purchased from Amazon’s Kindle store for only $0.99! I also plan to watch the Star Wars prequels and the original Star Wars series and write some reviews. Remember, it isn’t a true challenge as in work. It’s just something Carl wants to enjoy and share with other lovers of science fiction. Join us on the experience and have fun! What are YOU going to experience?

Hey, glad you found out about the event! I love reading science fiction anytime, but the cold weather of the later part of the year always gets me in a mood for more of it. Its fun to host something like this to try to share that passion with others.
Thanks for stopping by. I thought this project was definitely worth a shout-out on the network! 🙂
