Doug Adams Talks Desolation of Smaug Film Scores

doug-adams-1671928Doug Adams, music journalist and author of The Music of the Lord of the Rings (a must have for fans of the Lord of the Rings films and the film scores) stopped to do a few radio/podcast interviews to talk about the music from the Hobbit films. He gave interviews on Tell Tale Radio and Soundcast. He also talked about the importance of still using actual orchestral music and players in filmscores for films like this, some of the new themes introduced in the Hobbit films, Smaug and his themes, some of the similarities of the dwarven motifs carried over from the Rings scores, bits of film music history and many other wonderful things that soundtrack and film score fans – and fans of these films – would really enjoy. The interviews are hosted on Tall Tell Radio and also The Soundcast. To be honest, Tall Tell Radio is my favorite interview as it is simply Doug and his and prodigious knowledge of this music by Howard Shore and the podcast host. The other interview on Soundcast is good and they get into some honest appraisals of the score and even some interesting movie music history but they take up half of the show giving a review of The Desolation of Smuag, which I could done without. To skip the film review (unless you want to hear it) on Soundcast go to the 43:47 minute mark and begin listening there. Both podcasts are great shows for those who enjoy film music in general. To keep up with what Doug Adams has in store for fans of the Hobbit films and the music of Howard Shore go to his website: http://www.musicoflotr.com/

  1. Hey, thanks for the shout out! Doug is SUCH a nice guy…so easy to talk to…and obviously so knowledgable on the subject. I’m a huge fan of LOTR and The Hobbit, so it was thrilling to talk to someone so intimately involved with the production of those films.

If anyone’s interested, I also talked to him back in 2010 about his book “The Music of Lord of the Rings.” Here’s the link:

    Thanks again! Great site!
