With the superhero movie genre solidifying itself into the mainstream Hollywood industry, the hunt is on with studios to secure the rights to as many comic book characters as they can. Who could blame them? As Joss Whedan proved to the film industry, superheroes are a “juggernaut” at the box office! But who “owns who”?
The Geek Twins have created a graphic to give us a perspective.
I was listening to a recent podcast of Kevin Smith (Clerks), and he made a good point regarding the studios unwillingness to release or share their respective character rights. Basically, Smith’s observation/prediction was that since The Avengers, the studios now see the money potential in these style of films and that they could make “money for nothing” for just loaning out their character for studio crossovers in future films.
Fans could only hope for such common sense in Hollywood Execs…
