Vampire Chronicles: Anne Rice Announces, "Prince Lestat"

Anne Rice has dropped news that has been much overdue for fans.

While on The Dinner Party Show, Rice revealed her new book, “Prince Lestat”! The new book is a continuation to her revered “Vampire Chronicles” series which follows the lives of several Vampires and their experiences through the Vampire’s perspective. The Vampire muses included Louis, Claudia and the rebellious French aristocrat Lestat.

I read the original Vampire series years ago in high school. The books include, Interview with the Vampire (which spawned a movie starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt), The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of the Damned.

What I loved about her version of the “Vampire tale” was that it wasn’t about the hunt and eventual killing of the “evil Vampire”, but that it was presented from the perspective of the Vampire. A whole new take on the myth which included eliminating the Vampire’s weakness to garlic, crosses, stakes through the heart and more. Rice delved further into the mind of the Vampire as her main characters would discuss their thoughts, feelings, needs and their supernatural lives. Anne Rice breathed new life into a stale and predictable genre.

I met Anne Rice years ago and remember telling her that I read the books in high school and how much I loved them. She responded playfully with, “Oh my! I hope they aren’t reading my books in high school classes.”

It is not surprising that with the popularity of Vampires at an all time high, that Rice decided it was time for another book set around her beloved anti-hero, Lestat. My hope is that her book can start to erase the stumble in the genre with such book series as Twilight!

Lestat became a favored character of mine growing up which may have explained my hair, which I kept one length and long down to my waist. I look forward to the release of the new book and revisiting and “old friend”.

Prince Lestat is set to release on October 28, 2014. You can pre-order the book March 16, 2014.

  1. That’s pretty cool. Anne Rice has floated around with stuff, but I thought those first few books were incredible. She’s a helluva writer. Will be interesting to see if she’s captured the voice and feel of those originals. Cool that she went back and read her own stuff, it is a ton of information 😛
