Andy Serkis is set to direct a live-action version of The Jungle Book for Warner Bros., The Jungle Book would be the first major feature film directing gig for Andy Serkis. Serkis has served as second unit director on Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films. Previously Warner Bros. had been in talks in December with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for the project.

Serkis will also produce the film with Steve Kloves, screenwriter for the Harry Potter films and with Jonathan Cavendish, Serkis’ partner at his production company The Imaginarium. Callie Kloves has written the adaptation of the film. All of this comes on the heels of Disney’s latest effort to bring The Jungle Book back to the big screen with Jon Favreau directing and Idris Elba voicing the tiger, Sher Khan. Serkis has been a pioneer in performance capture roles as Gollum in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as King Kong in Jackson’s King Kong, as Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. He has also played the part of Screwtape in a recent audio production of C. S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters.

The Jungle Book is a classic story written by Rudyard Kipling and published in 1894. It is now in the public domain.
