Lightsabers Possible, says Harvard Physics Professor

It's all fun & games until someone loses a hand.

Harvard Physicis Professor Mikhail Lukin recently told the Huffington Post that lightsabers, as presented in the Star Wars films are scientifically possible. According to his recently published paper titled “Attractive Photons in a Quantum Nonlinear Medium,” Lukin details how the photons can be made from molecules. Photons, which have no mass and don’t normally interact with one another, but according to Lukin it is possible to create a bond between photons that causes them to react to one another in a manner quoted in Huffington Post as “not an in-apt analogy to compare this to lightsabers,” The physics of what’s happening in these molecules is similar to what we see in the movies.”

In short, based on the information put forth in Lukin’s article, it is possible to make solid objects out of pure light.
