If you got emotional just listening to the full version of Billy Boyd’s song, “The Last Goodbye” (released a few days ago), the new music video for the song is now here to tug on those heartstrings a little more. Combining scenes from the Hobbit movies as well as the Lord of the Rings films, the video really drives home the idea that the long journey of adapting our beloved Tolkien novels is coming to an end.
On writing “The Last Goodbye” Billy Boyd states:
“After seeing the film, I went to my room and I started to put down some ideas, and along with Fran and Philippa, we started to sculpt the song we thought the movie needed,” he says. “A lot of ideas took us to dead ends or we found the tone wasn’t just right. I think we discovered very quickly this wasn’t just a song to end The Battle of the Five Armies—it was a song to say goodbye to Middle-earth.” (source)
Watch the music video below and let us know what you think (don’t worry, we’re tearing up too):
I find it a little bit difficult to listen to this
song without getting teary eyed. The lord
of the rings and the hobbit are stories I grew up with, Tolkien was sort of
like a hero to me, and he never failed to amuse me. Watching the video makes you
realize that this is actually the last goodbye, all this amazing stories about
Middle-earth are coming to an end. Yes we will still have the books and we are
going to be able to relive the stories over and over, but the thrill of waiting
for a movie, and the excitement when going to see the premiere, it’s going
to be gone.
Billy
Boyd (best known for his role as Pippin in LOTR) created the song the movie needed, and I admire him
for that. The fact that he was capable to sum up the six movies in a
song is amazing. I feel like he really captured the essence of the stories.
Tolkien would be proud of what has had become of his adventurous and incredible
books. It’s really hard to say goodbye. LOTR has marked not only me but many
others.
