From Director Neill Blomkamp (District 9), comes this futuristic film about the journey of a police droid and its evolution to becoming sentient. Although the trailers give the impression at first of “Robocop meets Short Circuit”, it becomes apparent that this is a tale of humanity and the questions that it creates.
“In the near future, crime is patrolled by an oppressive mechanized police force. But now, the people are fighting back. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. As powerful, destructive forces start to see Chappie as a danger to mankind and order, they will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo and ensure that Chappie is the last of his kind.”
The film stars Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Sigourney Weaver and Hugh Jackman.
“I just loved everything about it”, said Copley who also starred in Blomkamp’s film District 9, “The questions about, could artificial intelligence be for human than humans…and I believe they could.”
Hugh Jackman is no stranger to action and science fiction known for his role in X-Men and his own robot themed movie Real Steal talked about what sets this movie apart from other films in the genre,
“often sci-fi is deemed as cinima-light. High on entertainment and visual but not so heavy on thematics”, going on to explain, “This [film} is very emotional. You will become attached to this robot more than you can imagine. What sets this movie apart isn’t just the entertainment but it is also about something important.”
CHAPPiE is in theaters March 6th.
