Tolkien Reading Day 2015: Middle-Earth Inspired Art by Joe Gilronan

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit” – J.R.R Tolkien. The 10 words that for me started a love affair with the writings of Tolkien and in particular Middle Earth, 10 words that have shaped my art.

On this most auspicious of days I find myself revisiting the writings of J.R.R Tolkien and where better to start than with the opening chapter of The Lord of The Rings, A Long-expected Party. The opening chapters rank among my favourite parts of the book and have inspired countless works, Frodo’s inheritance being just one.

It’s the 23rd of September and though the party is over, the Shire is all a buzz due to Bilbo’s vanishing act and the handing over of Bag End to Frodo.

Frodo and his good friends, Merry, Pippin and Sam idly chat around the gate of Bag End, while within earshot and never one to miss out on a bit of gossip, the Gaffer enjoys a pipe.

Little to Frodo’s knowledge, Bilbo’s estate comes with a far greater treasure, a dangerous treasure, a magical golden ring; Frodo’s fate and the fate of Middle Earth is about to change forever.

I wish one and all a wonderful Tolkien Reading Day.

“May the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails and the moon walks.”― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit.
