Most fans of the Harry Potter series will agree that a core message of the series is to stand up for what is right. After all, Harry stood up against Voldemort and the Death Eaters when they wanted to force all wizards to follow their rules and live the way they wanted them to. It’s a popular enough moral in Young Adult Fiction, and an important one, so it’s nice to see when the author truly believes what she writes.
While it’s easy to say that Voldemort is pure fiction, there are people out there who sometimes seem eerily in line with his beliefs, or at least with his habit of forcing his beliefs on others or threatening ugliness. When Ireland had their recent victory for same-sex marriage, the infamous Westboro Baptist Church got unpleasant on Twitter, to say the least. They Tweeted JKR that she’d like to see a marriage between Gandalf and Dumbledore and told her that they would picket. She replied with, “Alas, the sheer awesomeness of such a union in such a place would blow your tiny bigoted minds out of your thick sloping skulls.” Harsh words!
When some raised the point that, as they say, “It’s better not to feed the trolls,” she replied with such grace and class that, “I think it’s important that scared gay kids who aren’t out yet see hate speech challenged.” Proving, once again, that she really does understand, and more importantly, that she really does care.
