As a fan of The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit I love to read any news I come across concerning the books, movies, and the Tolkien family. The first time I saw Royd Tolkien was during an interview about The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies a little over a year ago and recently learned about his brother and the disease he was dealing with. His brother Mike had been diagnosed with ALS a few years ago and Royd took care of him. Mike recently passed away and left behind a bucket list of adventures he wanted Royd to do. So, he has decided to fulfill each one of them. There’s A Hole In My Bucket is the title of a documentary about Royd fulfilling the adventures on the bucket list. This is a great Legendarium Media interview from Hobbitcon 2014 where Royd talks about his brother and the documentary.

This one is a video of Mike and Royd taking part in the ALS Bucket Challenge.
ALS also known as MND in the UK is a disease that attacks a person’s nerves in the brain and spinal cord. It slowly stops the body’s mobility over time. To find out more about the disease and to make a donation go to http://www.alsa.org/ (us) or http://www.mndassociation.org/ (uk)
It’s hard to read or watch a story about someone who is living with this disease or any other disease. I can understand what family or friends may be feeling when they are watching their loved one going through something like this. I’ve had to watch some family members and friends deal with a disease that eventually they passed away from. All I can say about Royd and what is he’s doing for his brother is great. I can see how much he loved his brother when I watch or read interviews where he’s talking about him. I look forward to seeing the documentary when it’s released. Good luck to Royd on fulfilling the bucket list.
