Daisy Ridley returns to the Star Wars universe as Rey Skywalker in upcoming film!

I’ve been waiting and hoping for this announcement since the credits rolled on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. After Rey turns to the woman and reveals her chosen name of Skywalker, I wanted to see more, immediately. Admittedly, I would have liked to see re-worked a little bit so that it was more natural… heck, if they had Finn with her, and it was a short conversation between the two of them, that would have been nice. I wanted to see what happens next. Rey Skywalker has the Jedi texts that she pulled from Luke’s stash on the island, and she has just built her own lightsaber using her staff to do so. But where does it go from there?

We’re about to find out.

However, it’s going to be set about 15 years after the events of Rise of Skywalker during which we’ll see Rey building a new Jedi Order. Academy Award- and Emmy Award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) is directing. She’s been attached to direct the film since last year. It was only this morning that they announced Daisy Ridley’s involvement in the project, which was a surprise to me, even though she had been to Lucasfilm in the past few months to discuss something.

What about Finn? Is John Boyega going to come back to Star Wars?

Here’s where I speculate heavily. I think he will. In recent months, he’s become more accepting of Finn’s arc, and what they did with the story. I have a feeling that, now that they’ve gotten this announcement out of the way, the next major announcement will likely be his involvement. That, or they keep it under wraps until much later. Finn is Force-sensitive… but how Force-sensitive is the guy? That we don’t know. Could he be training with Rey? Could he arrive in this film, set 15 years later, remember, as a full-fledged Jedi Master? A Jedi Knight training to become a Jedi Master to teach alongside Rey in the new Jedi Order? Who really knows at this point.

Is this Rey film the start of a trilogy?

All they have announced is individual films today. Does that mean it couldn’t become a trilogy? No. I have a feeling they’re going to release films with open-ended stories going forward. Will it be a trilogy? Maybe. Could it be more films than that? Absolutely. Could it be 2 movies? Sure. But leave it up to the story to tell how many movies are needed, rather than trying to fit a story in a box of 3 movies. Remember, the original trilogy were just 3 episodes of a 9 episode saga… it just so happened that there were three films there. Indiana Jones is about to have a fifth film.

When does the Rey movie release?

According to IMDb, this film is scheduled for release in 2027. I can’t wait that long. However, my guess is it will be the 2025 release… but Dave Filoni is also directing a film that could fit that spot perfectly as well.
