Director James Mangold is going to be directing a Star Wars film that takes place at the dawn of the Jedi, set about 25,000 years before the events of the original trilogy. We don’t know much more than that. Mangold is a talented director, and Lucasfilm must really love working with him and the results he delivers. My guess is his Indiana Jones movie, Dial of Destiny, has impressed them enough to give him a shot at a Star Wars film.
What the film will be like is anyone’s guess. How do you tell a story about the beginning of the Jedi? This is going to be very interesting to see. And will the Sith factor in?
That said, here’s what Mangold said about it.
“When I first started talking to Kathy about doing one of these pictures, what occurred to me was thinking about what kind of genre of movie within Star Wars I wanted to do,” he said. “And I thought about a Biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments, about the dawning of the Force. Where did the Force come from, when did we discover it, when did we learn how to use it?”
The film doesn’t yet have a release date, and Mangold is pretty busy right now, finishing up Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and he’s also set to direct Swamp Thing at DC Studios.
